As a black, wheelchair-using, transgender model, Aaron Philips is restructuring the definition of a model. In her first ever cover for PAPER magazine, Philips is interviewed by someone who also defied traditional beauty standards— Naomi Campbell.

In terms of model representation, the focus typically critiques the lack of racial and body-positive inclusion. Rarely does the conversation touch on other factors such as physical ability. In fact, the disabled are completely erased from almost every stage of the fashion industry, even though they also participate as consumers.

What is extra special about Aaron Philip’s cover is that he is interviewed by legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell. A woman whose career has successfully surpassed decades of her white counterparts, much to the surprise of reluctant and downright racist fashion brands and designers. The symbolism between Campbell and Phillip’s interview from one classic black woman to the intersection of a modern black woman is inspirational.

"People are paying attention and seeing what can be done if things like simple accommodations are met for people with disabilities" Philips tells Campbell. Read the full article on how both women overcame personal and public obstacles to become the black powerhouses they are now.
