Last week it was announced that Beyonce would be the cover star of Vogue’s infamous September issue AND have complete creative control over her feature. Her first order of bidness was introducing the FIRST BLACK photographer to shoot the cover in the magazine’s HISTORY!!
Tyler Photo (@tylersphotos) is both the YOUNGEST and FIRST BLACK photographer in Vogue’s cover history. And. He. Shot. For. Beyonce. THIS IS ICONIC. If anyone has ever doubted Beyonce’s talent (not that we need any of that hateration or holleration here), you can’t doubt the fact that she has used her platform to celebrate the talents of lesser known artists and activists.
As amazing as this news is, it is important to remember that it was Beyonce that introduced this inclusivity and not Vogue. We Need 2 Tlk About how after 126 years, Vogue— like many other publications, beauty brands, TV and film industries are still behind when it comes to celebrating other communities.
In 2018, news like this seems shocking, But in reality it really isn’t. Beyonce was the FIRST BLACK WOMAN headliner at Coachella this year (rightfully renamed Beychella). Black Panther was the first black led superhero film, Sterling K Brown was the first black actor to win an Emmy in a leading Drama role, and lena waithe was the first black lesbian to cover Vanity Fair. 2018 is still a year of recognizing and celebrating “firsts”. While this year has been long overdue for the black community, let us remember and continue this fighting energy for other communities!!
