Justin Bieber announced his engagement to Hailey Baldwin yesterday after days of stalker-like speculation from the media. The Biebs took it to Instagram to write the cutest, heartfelt message of love for Haley that honestly thawed my bitter millennial-dating heart.

In the beginning of Bieber’s Instagram caption, he mentions how he had to announce their engagement faster than he wanted due to media pressure, and it makes me wonder why we are so invested in the lives and relationships of celebrities more than our own. Their engagement isn’t a flash mob (god remember those) or a televised final rose ceremony. It is a personal milestone in a couple’s life. A couple who just happen to have extraordinary careers. his caption, though heartfelt, shows how consumer demand for the invasion of celebrity privacy can ruin a private moment as special as the engagement of two young people.

This is something Ariana Grande clappedback about when a fan jokingly made a comment that Bieber and Grande’s recent engagements were just publicity stunts from their joint manager Scooter Braun. According to Billboard, in a now-deleted tweet the fan wrote: “First ariana get engaged to pete Davidson and now Justin bieber to hailey [Baldwin] the devil works hard but Scooter Braun works harder.”

Grande responded: “..... you do realize we are human beings who love and have lives ...... right .... ? and that scooter is a wonderful human being too who cares first n foremost ab our health and happiness ? love is lit. shit happens. i hope to god it happens to you too. u deserve it.” you tell 'em queen!!!

I truly hope that the public and fans of Bieber and Baldwin will allow the couple the privacy they deserve as they continue on with their engagement. Congratulations again to the happy couple!
