Collective Scream everyone, because here we go again... judging a woman's body. Fitness-famous personality Jillian Michaels went on Buzzfeed’s AM to DM to praise Lizzo’s music, but quickly fat shame the singer shortly after. Watch below:
You know what’s not going to be awesome about a singer with diabetes Jillian? A singer with body dysmorphia. Or a singer with anorexia. Does Jillian know what physical steps Lizzo is taking for her body?
Truth is *Lizzo reference* not everyone has, or will have, the same body type. So why cut down those that celebrate what they do have? Of course maintaining a healthy physique is important to a long-lasting life, but who (besides a professional doctor or nutritionist) is to dictate what that healthy body is?
A healthy body does not just start and end with one’s physicality— one’s mental, emotional and for some, spiritual well-being is equally necessary. Especially since it has been found to be a connector to upkeep the others.
Twitter was quick to come to Lizzo’s defense:
The racial component of Jillian’s criticism also cannot be ignored. Black women’s bodies have consistently been portrayed as too promiscuous, too difficult and TOO MUCH— until a non-black celebrity has appropriated that same frame for themselves.
While simultaneously telling black women to quiet down— spray tans, as well as butt and hip implants and lip fillers are rising cosmetic trends replicating what black women (and other women of color) have been shamed for naturally having. Why can’t we celebrate and support the success of Lizzo as we do the success of another singer? Where is this distaste for fuller bodies when it comes to male musicians like DJ Khaled?
Lizzo is unapologetically a talented black woman with a body. That's it.
It’s time we measure women on their confidence and the message they are presenting to their fans, rather than their waistline.
