Disney is getting down to fucking BUSINESS when it comes to latest live action film Mulan. Production began today and Disney gave the people what they wanted with a shot of Crystal Liu Yifei as badass warrior Fa Mulan.
Now, WE NEED 2 TLK ABOUT why this is film is more impactful than just for nostalgic-brownie points:
1. Initial news of the live-action film brought excitement then anger as rumors of the Disney spec script (which featured a white male traveler as Mulan’s love interest and ultimate film hero) spread thanks to an open letter by blogger Angry Asian Man.
AND THE IN-TA-NETS WAS HAVIN NONE OF THAT WHITE SAVIOR B.S. This isn’t Avatar or that god-awful Matt Damon movie — Great Wall Of China. Long gone are the days where studios could argue that PoC or female led films can’t demolish the box office. Ehm, The Hunger Games, Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Star Wars etc..
Thankfully, Disney clarified that the script would be restructured to accurately fit the 1998 animation and not cater to white male fragility which seems to think that a film without a white male lead character would prove unsuccessful or uninteresting.

2. Mulan is not only a woman, but a Chinese woman who *Mushu voice* grew up and saved China. This display of female empowerment and cultural inclusion comes at the perfect time of this decade’s #oscarssowhite , #metoo and other movements of racial appreciation and gender awareness.
Liu Yifei was chosen out of “nearly 1,000 candidates for the role across five continents” and the other cast members include Jet Li as the Emperor, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An and Donnie Yen. The film is set to release in early 2020.
