Netflix dropped a trailer for their new August series Insatiable and the Internet had some wooooords.

Directed by Lauren Gussis, Insatiable stars Debby Ryan who plays “Fatty Patty,” a plus-sized high school girl who is bullied because of her weight. The trailer continues with Ryan’s character getting punched in the face, leading to her jaw being wired shut over summer break. She returns to school with a dramatic weight loss due to her injury and everyone begins being nice to her— which sets her off on her plan for revenge.

Where… do I… start…?

I understand that the story is about “overcoming bullying and showing how beautiful you are on the inside”, blah blah. But why can’t women show society that they’re still beautiful on the outside?

Hollywood continuously tries to recycle this storyline. Modern films and shows tackle them by showing women who are no longer victims, but confident badasses. However their self-confidence only occurs after they’ve endured severe trauma or a dramatic transformation. Amy Schumer’s character only realized her worth after her brain injury in I Feel Pretty. Now we have Insatiable that presents a girl who is bullied and assaulted, only to find her purpose in revenge once she has reached her new skinny form.

I can see (and honestly love) the Heathers meets The Duff vibe they were going for, but this isn’t 2001 Shallow Hal. Audiences are woke and are no longer taking this insensitivity shit.

Actual plus-sized individuals don’t have the luxury of taking off a fat suit like Debby Ryan. Not that they need to lose the weight anyway. This fast dieting (or injury as the film has it) is not the message impressionable teenagers need to see and hear, no matter how ‘funny’ a comedy the film states it is. This film would have been A M A Z I N G if they left Patty’s character her original weight and she got badass revenge regardless. Now THAT’S the type of movie I’d love to see.

The trailer dropped today and there is already a petition to stop its release.

What are your thoughts? I'm all for giving films and shows a chance, so will you tune into the show or simply sign the petition?
