Entertainment Tonight broke news over the weekend that Rihanna was originally asked to perform at the Super Bowl, but reportedly turned in down in support of Colin Kapernick. Maroon 5 has been reported to perform next year.
If true, Rihanna isn’t the first black musical artist to make a statement in reference the Super Bowl. In a lyric from “Apeshit” JayZ raps how he turned down a Super Bowl offer:
“I said no to the Superbowl
You need me, I don’t need you
Every night we in the endzone
Tell the NFL we in stadiums too”

Mrs Carter also follows the same sentiment. Beyonce performed twice at the Super Bowl, as the main performer in 2013 and additional performer with Bruno Mars in 2014 with Coldplay. Her 2014 performance was an undeniable political statement filled pro black themes; making a reference to the Black Panther movement in the 60s, Malcolm X and Black Lives Matter.
Kapernick who last played for the San Francisco 49ers, is most known for his peaceful kneeling protests during the National Anthem to protest police brutality.
