Online retailer Revolve is facing backlash after one of its sweatshirts promoted body shaming. The billion dollar company released a new collection of caption sweatshirts to “shine a light on online trolling”.... If that intent wasn’t already problematic— the LPA sweatshirt has rightfully infuriated their consumers.
Reading “Being fat isn’t beautiful it’s an excuse” this is just one in a series of five. Each sweatshirt displays an actual shaming quote celebrity women have been told directly. This shirt in particular is associated with plus sized model Paloma Elsesser. Paloma is not shown wearing the sweatshirt on the site however, but rather a skinny Revolve model. The other sweatshirts follow the same format. They include one by Lena Dunham that reads: “Horrible Result of Modern Feminism” and Cara Delevingne: “Too boney to be boned”.
While the intent behind this collection was meant to start a conversation about bullying, Revolve completely missed the fucking mark by instead continuing the spread of this negative and superficial beauty ideology.
Revolve released a statement that the sweatshirt was prematurely released on the website and due to the backlash will pull the collection and donate $20,000 to Girls Write Now”, the initial recipients of the collections earnings.
