This female-led protest in Chile is exposing sexual violence against women in the country. A group of Chilean women named “LasTesis,” began the movement last year with a powerful street demonstration –wearing blindfolds while chanting about sexual abuse done by predators and the government and law enforcement that protect them.
The anthem is making waves around the world, with countries such as Mexico City, Paris and Barcelona performing the same demonstration.
Read the translated lyrics below:
“The patriarchy is a judge who tries us for being born
And our punishment is the violence you now see.
It's femicide, impunity for my murderer, it's disappearance, it's rape.
And it wasn't my fault, nor where I was, nor how I was dressed.
You were the rapist, you are the rapist.
It's the police, the judges, the state, the president.
The oppressive state is a macho rapist.
The rapist was you. The rapist is you.”
After the #metoo movement took off in 2006 and gained further ground with Hollywood mogul, Harvey Weinstein in 2017, protests to recognize rape culture and the ongoing sexual abuse against women will only continue to grow until all women are heard and protected.
So America, when will we participate and spread the word when it comes to the cries of our international sisters?
