Demi Lovato released a new single today, appropriately titled “Sober.” In the lyrics Demi admits to her listeners that she has relapsed on her sobriety after 6 years.
Demi has always been vocal about her passions and personal struggles. Something everyone (especially artists) have the right to keep private. However, Demi chose to share her recent soberity story, the best way she knews how— through song. I honestly admire how honest Demi has constantly choosen to be in her career. Her honesty in something this personal to her shows people that perfection is not attainable, and that it’s absolutely fine as long as you stand in your truth and try your best. I find such strength in her choice to share with the world because I think people who are not personally dealing with these issues can’t understand the constant battle of addiction. It also helps those who are dealing in similar situations that even their role models struggle just like us. She could have easily have dealt with her relapse in private. To have such a personal issue become such a public discussion topic is truly inspiring and refreshing to see her and other celebrities speak so openly about other issues such as mental health and sexual abuse.
Hopefully this song and this story she’s sharing can bring about the conversation of addiction beyond being a taboo, but a genuine social issue that affects women and men.
